Wet plate collodion photography has a unique way of rendering the world. Little silver salts react to light and become microscopic bits of silver; and the bits of silver form an image. There is no grain – the silver bits are too small for a microscope to see. But all those tiny little atoms of precious silver somehow come together in just the right way to capture a moment in time… forever maybe…

Our first tintype – washing in a tray after development
Illinois creative artist Carolyn, aka Ember, and I created these memories in silver and metal and wood. While each image is a story in itself, we also took the time to discuss Carolyn’s art and cosplay. Here a few questions and Carolyn’s answers…
What is it about modeling that you enjoy? I thoroughly enjoy modeling because it makes me feel so beautiful and empowered as a women.
Is there a type of story or type of image you especially love to create? I always love creating images that make you feel an emotion or sense of awe, but I do also really like to create macabre type of images.

Focusing the next tintype. The view through the camera is upside down and reversed!
Do you think about your path the next few years? Hmm not too sure what I aim to create in 5-10 years, but I just hope I’ve created a ton of new friendships along the way and that my modeling portfolio has grown a lot! Maybe I’ll eventually start to branch out more with modeling contracts and actually start getting paid for shoots.
What will people say about your art 100 years from now? I hope I’m remembered for creating a safe atmosphere in the modeling and cosplay world, and for creating some inspiration for future cosplayers!

Where All is Smiles..
Her smile draws you in
To a place where you feel safe
But is it really
Safety? An illusion of
Worlds that may not exist!
Why do you think Tintype is a great format for Cosplay? I love tintypes because the creation of the image is SUPER unique and hard to come by nowadays. The style taps into the original methods for photography, and I think that’s just incredible.
