The life of a Victorian style photographer is not always easy. Each image requires so much gear and chemicals and preparation and time that you often wonder is it worth the trouble? With almost no effort I could just take a cell phone picture… But then a client comment reinforces everything you are doing and the world feels like Spring again.
Last Fall we had the joy of creating Halloween tintypes with a group of models in Germantown / Milwaukee. The irrepressible Claire posed for the 8×10 plate below. It was near the end of the day and the sun was fading so we had to do a long exposure (which explains the bit of motion blur). SO the tintype is not going to win any awards for “technical” excellence.

It’s an awesome little immortalized memory!

Recently, I asked Clare about the tintype and she has it hanging in her bedroom and that “it’s an awesome little immortalized memory”. I love that thought! Why do we do all this work to create images using 175 year old technology? Because it makes awesome little immortalized memories! That tintype is not just silver and metal – it is the sum of the work we did and the memory we created. It has style and life and a little bit of our souls. Hundreds of years from now someone might look at it and wonder about our lives and the moment we immortalized.
Is it worth the trouble? Oh yes, it certainly is!
